new post

I don't really have much to say but am tired of seeing the same thing up on my site. :) (plus I am tired of other people's blogs being the same and I am hoping they will follow my example. hee hee)

So the end of the quarter is approaching and I am not really looking forward to the next 13 days. I have 2 papers and 2 tests and a presentation. Oh joy. I think it will be okay though. I am just unsure right now. I always get this way I guess.

This quarter sure had dragged on. I am ready for Spring quarter...which I am sure will go much faster. It is my last and therefore I must enjoy every moment. This quarter I have tried to do more things that I need to experience before I graduate such as making a waffle in Gwinn, and going to see a play in the theatre. Both were good. :) lol. Anyway, I should go...ttfn.

EMP

It is amazing how busy I have been, and yet I can't think of anything specific that I have really done since I last posted. :) It has just been a busy week I guess. My week days are pretty busy with all my little things.

Yesterday I ended up going to JonTon's to "study." We spent about an hour studying and about 2.5 hours hanging out. :) It was nice though. We had a wonderful homemade pizza dinner. And we watched some of the Olympics while continuing to discuss the superior/inferiority of the Canadian channel and NBC. :)

Friday night my friends and I went to Value Village to see if we could find clothes that would be in the 1950's era. We are looking for these clothes because next Saturday is the Experience Moyer Project (EMP). It is an event put on my Moyer that will be pretty cool. Each floor is a different theme and they have different activities etc. So, I ended up calling Tonia while at Value Village to see if she had anything I could borrow, because I thought she would be a pretty good resource. :) She said she could help me out, so I only ended up buying shoes at Value Village. Then yesterday when I went over to her house I found out that she had made me a poodle skirt! :) (It technically has a record on it instead of a poodle, but you get the idea...) So, that is what I will be wearing next Saturday! I might end up wearing it on Friday too, but I am unsure as of right now.

Only 2 more weeks of classes left and then I have a couple days of finals before I can come home. :) I am ready for the quarter to be over, but I am not sure I am ready for the next 2 weeks. lol. Oh well. Ready or not here they come...

I should have pictures to post soon of last weekend and also last night at Emerson Film Fest. :)

Quick post before class

Hey everybody! I don't have much time to post, but thought I should update you all since I am not sure when I will next get a chance (my weeks are pretty busy). This weekend was really great. Because we had Monday off I was able to fit in more stuff.

On Saturday Kristen, Vern, and Andrea came up to visit. Kristen was only there for about 5 hours or so, but it was still a great visit. We ate lunch at Chipotle and then walked around the UW campus and the Ave. It was fun. After Kristen left we took Andrea to Pike Place, and Kerry Park since she had never been to Seattle. It is nice to visit those places again, I don't go to them enough. :) We went to Dinner at spaghetti Factory and celebrated Megan and Andrea's birthdays early. It was nice.
Vern and Andrea spent the night and so we also went out to lunch on Sunday.

It was a very nice visit. I am glad that they came up, I haven't seen them in a while. After they left on Sunday, I did a little bit of homework and then just relaxed before evening church with JonTon.

On Monday I did homework in the morning and early afternoon and then left to spend the evening with JonTon. It was nice to get off campus and watch a movie with Tonia. I helped Tonia sign up for Netflix, so now we can have our movies all set up for the next few weeks. :) I heart Netflix.

So, that was my weekend....In other news I am finally registered for my classes next quarter. I attempted to register for them on Friday, but had some difficulty, but it all got worked out today. :) Yay! For the first time in 3-4 quarters I am only taking 15 (I have been taking 17). :) So that should be good. I guess I have told you all that already though. Scroll down to a couple of days ago if you want to see my schedule again for next quarter. :)

Anyway, I guess I should get ready for class. Hope everyone is doing well! :)

Could ya would ya, ain't ya gonna, if I asked you would you wanna, be my baby tonight!

This week has been going pretty well. I haven't had anything major due in any of my classes so I have just been trying to relax a little. On Monday night I went to JonTon's and watched the movie "Just Like Heaven." I would recommend this chick flick to everyone interested. :) It is very cute, Tonia and I enjoyed it a lot. After the movie, and once Jonathan was home from work we watched the Olympics. It was a very nice evening. :)

Yesterday was a very long day for me. I had my normal classes and then work, and then I had a group project. We threw a Valentine's Day Party for a sunday school group at the Salvation Army church in Ballard. We had a about 40 kids show up and all it went pretty well considering the large turn out. We did however expect that many kids, so it was all good. :) We had a cookie decorating station, a valentine making station, a coloring station, a heart bingo station, and we played a couple games as well. I would call it a success! :)....After that it was like 9:00 and I watched a little of the movie my floor was watching, but I had already seen it so I didn't stay very long. I hadn't had any dinner so Emily and I went to Taco Bell at 10:30ish. heh. Then I cam back to my room and watched more of the Olympics! Yay!

Today I have gone to class and done homework. I got a package from Aunt Linda today! I was slightly afraid that it would be the dreaded flamingo, however it was not. I was rewarded with Valentine things instead. She sent a really cool magnetic "Mr. Right." You can dress him up (or down) in different out fits. It is very fun. Bonnie likes it as well, although I think she is slightly disturbed by it. lol. It is now proudly displayed on the front of our fridge. hee hee. :) It makes me laugh. :) Thanks Aunt Linda!

Anyway, I better get to class. I just got done with dinner and have been killing time until class starts. Bah!

My friends are coming up this weekend so I am excited about that. Bonnie and I have to make sure the room is presentable though. I think we will end up doing this on Friday. However, it won't take too long cause it looks pretty good (at least my side. lol). Anyway, ttfn. ~Laura

I heart the Olympics!

So, I have been watching the Olympics as much as possible this weekend. I watched most of the opening ceremonies on Friday night, but left after the parade of nations to go watch a movie with the girls on the floor. Then today I got up and watched as much as I could. I ended up doing a lot of shopping today. I went to the Dollar Tree and Rite Aid for stuff for my group project and then my friends and I went to Fred Meyer and Safeway to stalk up on needed items. :) I managed to do a little homework, but have spent most of my day watching the Olympics. Since I have cable there are 4 channels that possibly show Olympic activities. Obviously NBC does (but mostly in the evening), then USA, and CNBC also showed some things in the morning and afternoon. Plus the Canadian broadcasting channel had Olympics on most of the day. This was interesting because you get the Canadian slant on things. I must say though that I think that America does a better job of presenting the Olympics than Canada. I feel there are more special interest stories with the U.S., plus our graphics and theme song are better. hee hee. I haven't decided how I am going to balance all my required responsibilities and still be able to get in as much Olympic watching as possible these next 2 weeks. lol. Oh well, priorities I guess....

After today's film class I will not have anything big due for a couple of weeks. This will be nice, maybe I can relax a little. Today though I have my midterm in my film class. I expect it to be pretty hard, and I hope I am prepared. I am not sure how I could have really studied more though so...we shall see. :)

Later tonight I am going to go to JonTon's. It will be nice to get off campus, do my laundry, and hang out with family. I am increasingly homesick and tired of all things related to school. So, hopefully tonight helps. :) I am sure it will....

so close, and yet....

Today I met with my advisor to plan for next quarter's classes. It was a nice visit since I like my advisor and since she likes me (she enjoys the fact that I plan ahead. hee hee). So, anyway for the first time in like 3-4 quarters I am only going to be taking 15 credits (as opposed to 17)! Hopefully this will make my last quarter somewhat easier...but maybe not since they are all upper division classes. heh. Also I will enjoy next quarter's schedule a lot more than this quarter's. I am back to having MWF classes which means I can work on Tuesday and Thursday and also use these days for homework. This will take the pressure off MWF and allow me to be not so stressed. I will have 2 evening classes however, which means that I will have something every evening except Friday...oh well. For all who care below is what my class schedule will look like (assuming I actually get my classes when I register...which hasn't been a problem so far). Go Seahawks!

Another week has passed successfully. I sometimes wonder on Mondays if I will make it until Friday, but I always do somehow. :) The first part of this week was pretty stressful with the planning for tests and papers, but the second half wasn't so bad.

Today when I woke up the power was out. Apparently it went off about 5:15 a.m. and it didn't come back on until about 9:30 a.m. It was kinda exciting, but I was asleep for most of it, so that kinda sucks. lol. I don't think that power outages happen enough. lol.

I have spent today doing homework...and avoiding doing homework. However, I believe that I have now gotten enough done to forget about the rest. lol. This way I can spend all tomorrow relaxing. I am going to watch the superbowl with JonTon at Dan and Joy's. This should be good...hopefully the Seahawks will win! Woot! I told Jonathan I wanted a riot in the streets of Seattle if we win...after discussion we decided the riot should be more like mardi gras and less like WTO riots...hee hee. :)

Anyway, I don't really have much to say I guess, just thought I would update since I had the time finally. :) Hope you have a good weekend!

Singleness

As we approach Single Awareness Day (aka Valentine's Day) I thought I would use my blog for something other than my daily schedule: personal rhetoric. :)

Today in my Corinthians Bible Study we studied 1 Cor. 7, which is on marriage. In this chapter Paul discusses how he wishes that all could be unmarried like he is. Throughout the chapter we see that the mindset is quite opposite than today's American Protestant mindset. Today the church has become wedding factories; it is the business of the church to marry people. The Protestant view seems to have the idea that if you are not married than there is something wrong.

It used to be that in the Jewish tradition marriage made someone whole (as in Adam and Eve completing one another). However, Paul's view is that after Christ came the wholeness is found in the union with Christ not with another human being. Which I thought was an interesting point.

Paul says in 1 Cor. 7:32-33 "An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs--how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of the world--how he can please his wife--and his interests are divided." Singles can devote themselves more wholly to the things of the Lord without being distracted by family, etc. This is what the books I have read reiterate.

My time here at SPU has been spent in reflection on my singleness. My Bible Studies have focused on what Christian singleness looks like. Unlike what Paul appears to be saying here (i.e. singleness is the better way) the books I have read primarily state that " 'while you are waiting' you should live this way..." However, is there a way that Christians today are not thinking about? Churches today struggle with what to do with single adults. They have youth programs, college programs, married programs, but rarely do they have single adult programs (and if they do it is awkward because there is a wide age range). For the church to be ignoring these people is wrong. We need churches who champion these people.

I am saying this not to say that marriage is bad, for not even Paul is saying that. Paul is saying that neither marriage nor singleness is wrong but one allows more time/service for God. I believe that the Protestant outlook perhaps needs to be revamped. These people do not deserve our pity but our pride for they are serving the Lord in a way that others cannot. God has called them to singleness, whether it is for a short time or for their whole life. Singles should not be looked down upon but rather uplifted for they are doing something few are able to.

Perhaps I can state these things because I have had strong single adult role models in my life. People I look up to and want to be like. For that reason I know that if I don't get married it will not be the end of the world (despite what the world--or even the church--tells me.) However, it saddens me to see the American Protestant mindset to be so skewed.

I hope that this allows you to ponder singleness in a way perhaps you hadn't before. I also hope that the Christian community can change because they way it is now is not right.

Well I have decided to give up on the paper of death...sometimes I wonder why I stress out so much since all I need to get in my classes is a 'D' to graduate. I think I would have to try really hard to get a 'D.' So...I guess that is good news. lol.

This is my stressful week, after this week I feel like I will be able to make it through the next of the quarter. I have 2 tests tomorrow...One in Math (which is hard to study for...plus we get note cards) and the other test is Organizational Behavior (50 multiple choice questions....so I figure I can BS it...that is what Organizational Behavior is all about really...a bunch of BS). So....that is my day tomorrow. Then on Thursday my paper is due, but I think it is kinda crappy. There isn't much more I can do for it though....

Anyway, I am hoping that after tomorrow I can breathe a little easier...
