Christmas with the Powers that be....

"The Powers That Be"...heh. heh. I am sooo clever. lol

Anyway, I spent Christmas day with Reuben's family and it turned into an overnight adventure! :) Reuben came and got me Christmas morning at around 8 a.m. since it was so snowy out. He was supposed to pick me up at 7:30, but apparently he had to dig himself out of the valley. We headed back to his parents house in his subaru. The roads were pretty clear, except for the last mile or so, then it was not as cleared off by snow plows. We parked at the top of the driveway and walked down because his driveway is pretty long and it requires going over a one way at a time bridge.

We arrived at his parents house just in time for the presents! The kids were all lined up to be let into the living room to open thier stockings. It has been a long time since I have been around kids at Christmas! I had forgotten what that was like. After the kids were done with their stockings there was a short break and then it was on to the tree! :) ...Thinking back to my childhood we were pretty much always required to take turns opening presents...not so much at the Power house. lol. It was pretty crazy with 8 kids ranging from the ages of 9-17 grabbing and ripping open presents. :) It was pretty hilarious to watch. A couple presents got opened by the wrong person in the mayhem. lol. All the adults just stood back and watched, saving their own presents for after the craziness.

After we opened presents it was time for breakfast! Eggs, hashbrowns, and sausage. Yum. Reuben's parents got halfway through making it when the power went out! They had to finish making it outside on the camping stove. It was still good though. :)
The power was out for about 3 hours or so. While it was out the adults just sat around and talked, or watch the kids play with their new toys. One of Reuben's sisters, who is about 10ish I think, got a slinky. It was her favorite toy. She played with it for hours and hours. She made piles of books to have it travel down. She also got a toy laptop with educational stuff and games on it...but she mainly used it as a step for her slinky. lol. :)

The kids also got a wii for Christmas. So as soon as the power was back on Reuben was hooking it up for them. The next few hours was spent playing/watching the kids play wii. It was pretty fun. I slaughtered Reuben at bowling. :) heh heh.

At around 4:00 Reuben and I decided to attempt to get me home. It had snowed a little during the day...so we weren't sure of our chances. We hiked back to the car. During the day 2 other cars had parked near Reuben. He tried to make it out, but was sliding around quite a bit, so he decided to try to shovel the snow a bit. He shoveled for about an hour, but because of the 2 cars and the cliff leading to the river he finally just called it quits and we hiked back down to his parents. I didn't mind so much because I didn't have anything pressing back in Longview. I just wish I had brought extra clothes. :)

So we had a wonderful dinner with the Powers family. We had ham, potatoes, peas, and rolls. It was very good. The conversation was very educational. It started out with who had the flattest/biggest nose and digressed into discussion of milk coming out of various holes in the head. lol. Great fun for all. Just as dinner was coming to a close the power went off again. :)

This time it was dark, so the candles and lanterns had to be brought out. The kids entertained themselves with a few games while the adults talked. After a while Reuben and I helped guess for a pictionary game some of them were playing. At about 10:30, just as the lights came back on Reuben and I hiked down to his grandmas where I stayed the night.

I slept in a very comfortable cozy bed with an electric blanket. It was very nice. I borrowed some pjs from his grandma and was all set. :) It took me a while to fall asleep, but once I did I had a nice night. I woke up at about 9:30 then Reuben stopped by to make the hike back up to his parents house.

We had a nice breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes. Only a few of the kids were awake. They were playing new computer games. It was pretty relaxing. I spent the rest of the day watching the kids play wii. I soon became the time police, ensuring that everyone got their turn. :) It was fun though. Wii is almost as fun to watch as it is to play. ...Reuben and his dad spent the day digging out Reuben's car and then his dad's car. Finally at about 7:00 this evening Reuben and I hiked back to the car and were able to make it onto the freshly snow-plowed road. However, Reuben discovered that one of his windshield wipers was missing--the drivers side! lol. So we drove into town with only one working windshiled wiper. We stopped at Shucks to get a new one once we got into Longview. lol.

Whew. What an adventure! Once I got back into town and turned on my phone my message chime went off for like 30 seconds. Apparently I was missed. Now that I have showered and have fresh clothes on I am sitting on my couch enjoying the peace and quite....I forgot that it could be this quiet. lol.

Even with all the craziness it was still a wonderful Christmas. I am glad that I got stuck there. It allowed for more time with Reuben and his family and definately makes a more interesting story....."Mom, are you seriously telling us your White Christmas story again??!"

I think by the end of it I was able to remember all of their names: Edik, Raya, Mirielle, Josh, Elianna, Hannah, Nakita, and Abby! lol. Yay!

Thoughts on Disneyland

Well I made it back from Disneyland alive....barely. The flight back home was pretty rough and made me sick....but other than that I had a very enjoyable trip.

Here are some of my random thoughts on Disneyland and a few more pics. Enjoy!

Thought #1
Disneyland makes you both want to have a child and want to never have a child at the same time. You look to your right and see an adorable child dressed up as a disney character excited to experience the magic of disneyland....then you look to your left and see a kid bawling his head off because The Happiest Place on Earth isn't meeting his every desire. lol

Thought #2
Never in my life will I go to disneyland with a stroller.

Thought #3
I think the parents at Disneyland kinda forget why they are there...They are so intent on making sure they give their child the best disney experience possible that they make their kids miserable. Seriously, if your kid doesn't want to ride finding nemo why make him stand in a 30 minute line?? Also if your kid is grumpy and repeatedly telling you that they are tired and rubbing their eyes at 8:30 p.m. perhaps you should go back to the hotel instead of making them ride Dumbo.

Thought #4
It is exteremly easy to get sucked into the vortex of consumerism that lies at the heart of Disneyland. You must constantly be on your gaurd!! Otherwise you will find yourself buying overpriced suveniers that you will sell at a garage sale in less than 5 years.
On that same note, it is hard to believe we are in an economic downfall based on the number of loaded disney bags I saw walk out of Disneyland with families. Wowser!

As I was riding the Pinocchio ride I was struck by the irony of the evil carnival land Pinocchio gets sucked into going to and Disneyland. I know this seems rather a harsh comparison on The Happiest Place on Earth....but it does have some similarities. lol.

Anyway, all those random semi negative thoughts aside I had a super great time. Andrea and I were able to stick together and ride all the non-scary rides. Our favorites being Thunder Mountain Railroad (we rode this one at least 3 times a day), Maderhorn, Soarin' over California, and the new Toy Story ride.

I think it would be fun to take an extended family vacation there sometime...any takers?

Enjoy the pics below.

These first 3 pictures are from the band I went to see in Costa Mesa with my SPU friends Heather, Ashlee, and Jenny. We went out to dinner Tuesday evening and then went to see the band Barcelona play. It was pretty cool, especially since it is a band made up entirely of former SPU students. :) I recognized the members from the GROUP band. I guess they just signed a contract with Universal Records...so that is pretty cool. Heather, Ashlee, and Jenny knew all the members, so they interacted with us some before/after their set. Good times.

These other pictures are just from around Disney. It was fun to have everything decorated for Christmas, which I think some of my earlier pictures showed. The last picture is from the ride Buzz Lightyear. In it you use a laser gun to shoot targets and earn points. It is pretty fun. I have a funny story about it, but you will have to ask me in person. Then at the end you can email yourself the picture that they took of you during the ride. I was never able to get a fantastic picture of myself, but it was still fun. Plus they put the cartoon spaceship in front of it, which in this case blocks the fact that I am actually holding my gun and playing the game. You can tell I was playing the game because I am space ranger 2 and have the highest score!! lol. Whatev.

Visiting Teresa

I thought I would go ahead and blog about last weekend. Teresa's friend Chauntel and I headed down to Salem to visit Teresa on Friday evening. We got to Corban around 9:30pm despite following google's directions (not helpful). :)

It was a really good visit. Friday night we went out and rented movies and watched one in the movie lounge. It was pretty late by the time we got to bed. Chauntel and I slept on the hard floor, but it wasn't too bad. Then on Saturday we woke up at about 10:00 and got ready to go watch the movie Twilight in the theaters! It is a movie based on the popular book series on vampires that is set in Forks, WA. Most of the school scenes are filmed at Kalama High.....Anyway, we were all really excited to see it since we just finished the book not too long ago. We all liked it a lot and can't wait until the rest of the series is made into movies! :)

After the movie we ate at Sonic and then headed back to campus for a tour. It was nice to see Teresa's college and get an idea of her daily life. After the tour we headed for the Woodburn Outlet Mall for some shopping! :) We were all successfully able to spend too much money. lol. It was great though; I got some new sweaters to wear, which makes me happy.

Then after the shopping we ate dinner at a diner in Woodburn. Nothing to rave about... Then it was back to Corban where we surfed the net for fun videos, and browsed facebook for a while before starting our 2nd and 3rd movies. The three movies we watched this weekend were: Definitely Maybe, Penelope, and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. I think I would recommend all of them. They were cute.

We got to bed really late Saturday night too and slept in on Sunday. We didn't go to church because we were tired. :) We ate lunch in the campus cafeteria and then packed up to go home.

It was a really fun weekend and I am looking forward to being able to do it again next semester. :)

2nd post of the day

I got this off Teresa's blog....for some reason mine doesn't add up to 100% though...odd.

Today was quilting day. This time it was at Mom's house. The attendees were Mom, myself, Susie, and Jeanie. As always we spend the first hour or so discussing our latest projects and having show and tell. :) Eventually we got around to actually sewing. Today I was working on a Christmas panel to hang on my wall. I added a green border and a green backing to it. It turned out great! So now I have something to put on my wall at Christmastime to make my apt more festive. :) I can't wait until Christmas!!

I am currently waiting for Reuben to come pick me up for our date night. :) We are going out to dinner and then we are going to see "My Fair Lady" at RAL. I really enjoy seeing plays and it has been a while, so it should be good. Gabbie Stiltz is in the play so that is another great reason to see it. :)

Anyway, guess that is all for now. Check out the picture below of my creation.

Life in Laura Land has been pretty busy lately. It is kinda rare for me to have an evening at home to catch up. :) I have been busy hanging out with friends and family.
Last weekend Mom and I went up to JonTon's to learn how to make Christmas ornaments from the master: Tonia. :) It was great fun. I am very happy to have learned a new craft. I am always on the look out for new crafts. This was is particularly great since it helps me with Christmas gifts. :)
This week has been good. Work is actually slowing down a bit which means I can catch up on everything I have set on hold while I was "putting out fires." I am glad tomorrow is Friday though.
Earlier this week I had a semi-minor apartment disaster. I came home from visiting Grandma and Grandad and on Sunday evening and found that my kitchen had flooded! Gah! It wasn't very deep at all, but it was still a mess. I do not think garbage disposals are all they are cracked up to be....meh.
Anyway, this weekend I will actually be in Longview! :) First time in a while. I don't have any plans for Halloween...I think I am hiding out at Diane's house. Then on Saturday Kristen and I are going shopping! It will be nice to buy new clothes and have more options. :)
So....I guess that is the update from me. Maybe I will have more to say after this weekend.

a-MAZE-ing

I have been traveling the 1-5 corridor a lot this month. Two weeks ago I went up to Seattle to visit my Moyer friends and last week I went up to Seattle to visit Megan and Veronica. I was able to see both of their new places. We just hung out mostly eating food and watching tv/movies. We did however request tickets for 2010 Olympics! Woohoo! We are planning on going to 2 events: Speed Skating and Snowboarding Half-pipe. :)

This weekend Reuben and I went up to JonTon's Harvest Fest. We decided to go last minute. :) I had made David a pumpkin hat that I wanted to give him so Reuben agreed to go with me. :) We drove up early Saturday and arrived at the Pumpkin Patch/Corn Maze around 10:00. We wandered around the maze for about an hour or so and then went back to JonTon's to eat the Harvest Feast. It was a good day all around. :) Good food, good company...

Next weekend it is back up to JonTon's to make Christmas ornaments with Tonia. :)

See pictures below. :)

Has the rumor reached you yet?

So I thought I should go ahead and post a blog concerning my new boyfriend Reuben. :) Yes, it is true, I have a boyfriend.

Diane Miollis introduced us to eachother about a month ago at one of our weekly Sunday dinners. We have been slowly getting to know eachother over the course the month and started dating officially last week. He is a really great guy who has many qualities I respect and desire. He works as an IT consultant for a local business and lives in Rose Valley (...er Kelso for you out of towners). He is also going to school for a degree completion program at Multnomah Bible College.

We have had fun being together and going out to dinner. We celebrated his birthday last Monday at a Chinese restaruant (I know what you are thinking - "Laura doesn't like Chinese"...however it was a Chinese buffet which allowed me to try a bunch of different things. lol) And then on Friday we went out to olive Garden. It was a nice drive and we got to talk a lot while we waiting for a table to open up. After dinner we came back and watched Stargate (the movie...the first one).

On Saturday I went up to Seattle to visit my college friends and say goodbye to one of them as she is going to Alabama for graduate school. It was great to see everyone and some of their new apartments. We played apples to apples and it was probably the funnest experience I have had with that game. :) I left Seattle at like 8 p.m. and drove back to Longview. It was a quick trip, but a good one.

On Sunday after church Reuben came over to Mom/Dad's and met them as well as Teresa. He made a favorable impression (as I knew he would). For more on their opionion you should ask them yourself. :) Then after Mom/Dad's we hung out for a while before Sunday dinner with the "Miollis" crew. It was a good weekend.

Since then I have been adjusting to life as a girlfriend and enjoying it. :)
Work is still going good. I have been really busy the last week, which is both good and sorta annoying, because I would kinda like a bit of a dull day to catch up on everything. lol.

Anyway, that is my life right now. Hopefully you can all meet Reuben soon. See picture below for what he looks like. I will be posting more pictures of us together at a later date.

A+

So, I just have to brag on myself a little. (I figure I have the right to do so on my own blog...)
At work we have these forms we have to fill out whenever we get new patients and whenever a patient dies (2728 and 2746 forms). You may remember me talking about them before in regards to the fact that they were impossible to reorder. lol. ...Anyway, so these forms are required to be turned in within a certain time period of the patient event (new/death). It is monitored by the Northwest Renal Network. The forms are rather difficult to fill out --the questions are confusing at first and occasionally a question is missed.
So these forms are turned in and we get a compliance report based on how timely we are and how accurate we are. Previous to my taking over the position we were at about a 75% compliance rate. The goal is to reach 90% and any Dialysis unit that doesn't has to fill out an action plan each quarter stating their plan to improve. I have had to fill out 2-3 of these action plans. Ew.
However, we just got our most recent compliance report and we are at a 94% compliance rate! :) I am quite please with the fact that in the year I have worked there we have not only surpassed the Network's goal, but have beaten the Network average and the state average! Woohoo! :)
It is kinda funny because I have posted the compliance report graph showing our growth and current 94% compliance on the back of our office door and enjoy pointing it out to all the staff that enter. lol.
Anyway, I thought I would share that with you so you can share in my happiness. lol.

Since everyone else with a blog seems to have already posted wedding pictures from this last weekend I guess I will not. :) I did post them on facebook though if someone is reading this and wants to see them....

It was a lovely wedding and it was great to see everyone again. It was the first time seeing JonTon+D and Teresa in a while. I enjoyed having everyone together. We definitely need to do that more often. :)

Other than that I am not sure I have a lot to blog about. It was a crazy day at work so I am glad to be relaxing at home now.

My weekend looks pretty full. I guess Teresa comes back in town Thursday night, so that will be cool. :) Then on Saturday I am headed up to Seattle to visit my college friends and say good-bye to one of them as she is heading off to grad school. It will be a quick visit, but a good one.

I guess that is all for now. If you want more details ask me in person I guess.

Gah! A spider just tried to attack me! It attempted to get me when I am most volunerable...almost asleep. Lying in bed minding my own business and it sneaks up and tried to get me!
Ew..ew....ew. I hate waking up to spiders in my bed...close to my head. It was no small spider either....well it's body was, but it's legs were not. Bigger than a quarter which in my books warrants freaking out. (There are two exceptions to this quarter rule however: any spider in bed, and any spider in the shower.)
What makes it worse is that this is the 3rd spider I have killed in my apartment tonight...each of varying size. I am being over run. It is probably good I am going to the beach for a few days. Hopefully they won't take over. :(
Now I have to figure out where to sleep tonight as my bed is obviously off limits. Grrrrr.

On the bright side Casablanca is on OPB...

A trip to Medford

Here are some pictures from my trip to Medford with the Miollis'. :) They are kinda lame but Jacob is pretty slow about getting me his pictures. We left Thursday early afternoon and got there in time to put Andrea's horse in its stall at the horseshow and eat dinner. Then on Friday I hung out with Andrea at the horseshow and afterwords Diane, Jacob, Andrea, and I headed to Ashland to hang out and see a Shakespeare show in the evening. We saw Comedy of Errors as a western musical. It was really good. I enjoyed it a lot. I definately want to go back to the Shakespeare festival sometime.
Then on Saturday it was back to the horseshow in the morning. It was nice to see Andrea in her element. :) In the afternoon we went on a hike near Crater Lake where we saw several waterfalls.
On Sunday Andrea finished her horseshow--she won high point! Then Andrea and I packed up and headed home. We got home pretty late, but it was nice to be back. :)
I had Monday off too so I had a day of relaxing at home. It was a good trip. It was nice to see Andrea/Diane's Mom and get away from Longview. Hopefully I will get the pics from the hike that Jacob has soon. Enjoy~

Fancy sleeps on the trip down

Random picture of me due to 6 hours of boredom in the car. :)

As Andrea's Mom's house is a work in progress I thought her sign was cute. :)

Bonnie's Wedding

So, this weekend I went to Yakima for Bonnie's wedding! I left after work (I got off early) on Wednesday. I got to Yakima about 7ish. It was a fine drive. I had never driven to Yakima before, it was a bit of an adventure. :) I got there alright though. Thursday and Friday were spend preparing for the wedding. Making center pieces etc. :) It was good to spend time with Bonnie and Stephanie (the other bridemaid I am good friends with).

Saturday was the day of the wedding. It went off really well. :) It was kinda odd being at a wedding where I knew so few people. There were about 8 SPU people there. After the wedding/reception and cleanup I went out to dinner with 5 of my SPU friends. We had a really good time catching up with eachother. A couple of them are going off to semi-far-away places so it was good to see them before they go.

The pictures below aren't the best, but hopefully I will get some better ones soon. Next weekend I am going to Medford w/ Andrea and Diane. It should be good. I may have some pictures from that...but I am not sure.
